Thika School of Medicine and Health Sciences Explore KEMSA’s Operations Up Close

6/3/2026

A group of Nursing students from the Thika School of Medicine and Health Sciences toured KEMSA’s National Supply Chain Centre in Embakasi.

They witnessed first-hand how essential medicines are stored and tracked. They also observed cold chain systems that safeguard vaccines and toured the laboratory, where KEMSA Lab officers carry out rigorous quality checks to ensure every product meets strict safety standards.

“Seeing the cold chain in action was eye-opening. We often take vaccines for granted, but now we understand the science and logistics behind keeping them viable,” said one student.

The visit also highlighted inventory management, procurement and distribution processes. The students appreciated touring the laboratory and observing quality checks, gaining a deeper understanding that patient safety begins long before patients reach the hospital; it starts with every step in the supply chain.

The experience gave the students practical insight into how health systems function beyond the hospital bedside, showing that nurses’ roles intersect with wider health operations in ways often invisible to patients.

KEMSA continues to open its doors to future healthcare professionals, offering them a closer look at the operational backbone that supports Kenya’s health sector.
