U.S. Department of State Office of Inspector General Visits KEMSA to Strengthen Understanding of Kenya's Health Supply Chain

The Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) today hosted a delegation from the U.S. Department of State Office of Inspector General (OIG) for a familiarisation visit aimed at gaining deeper insight into the Authority's role in safeguarding Kenya's healthcare supply chain and supporting Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

The delegation was received by KEMSA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Waqo Ejersa, together with the Authority's Senior Management Team, at the Authority's headquarters. The visit commenced with a high-level engagement on KEMSA's transformation agenda before proceeding to the central warehouse, where the delegation experienced first-hand the systems, technologies and operational processes that underpin the delivery of quality-assured health commodities across the country.

The engagement provided an opportunity for KEMSA to demonstrate how its ongoing reforms are strengthening commodity security through strategic demand planning, procurement excellence, inventory optimisation and support for local manufacturing. These interventions are enhancing the resilience of Kenya's healthcare supply chain while ensuring reliable, affordable and accessible quality-assured health products reach patients in every part of the country.

During the warehouse tour, the delegation was taken through KEMSA's end-to-end supply chain, showcasing warehouse operations, nationwide distribution and the digital solutions that drive operational excellence, including the Logistics Management Information System (LMIS), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), data analytics and real-time performance dashboards. These technologies are improving supply chain visibility, enabling data-driven decision-making, enhancing transparency and responsiveness, and supporting financial sustainability.

The Authority highlighted how these reforms are translating into tangible health outcomes by improving commodity availability, accelerating deliveries to health facilities, expanding equitable access to essential medicines and medical supplies, strengthening national health security and building a high-performing institution capable of delivering Kenya's Universal Health Coverage agenda.

Speaking during the engagement, Dr. Waqo reaffirmed KEMSA's commitment to continuously transforming the Authority into a modern, accountable and performance-driven institution that improves health outcomes for every Kenyan.
